National Beer Lovers Day: The health benefits of drinking beer

Last year, Heineken created one of the best beer ads ever. In an effort to challenge gender stereotypes, it showed several waiters serving the wrong drink to women who had ordered a beer but instead were given a cocktail. The message was simple, not only do women drink beer but sometimes, it’s their beverage of choice. In fact, according to a recent study, some 11% of women recently surveyed said they drank beer more than once a week, up from 6% in a 2019 report. And did you know there’s an entire community of women who love beer so much they’ve created The Society of Beer Drinking Ladies – an organization determined to shake up the male-dominated beer industry by hosting secret ‘bevy’ events (pre-pandemic) for women to hang out and enjoy beer.

But it’s not just the taste that has women clamoring for beer but the health benefits too. Yes, you read that correctly; there is a growing body of evidence endorsing the health benefits of drinking beer, of course, when done in moderation.

Let’s just get this out of the way first, studies show that casual beer drinkers don’t necessarily have larger bellies. Obviously, you will gain weight with excessive drinking, but that limited to beer. A small, sugary cocktail, for example, could have far more calories than an entire pint of beer.

We’re not saying that beer is considered a healthy food, but it does have some real benefits. And seeing as it is National Beer Day, we figured we would share some of the reasons why experts say beer isn’t bad for you, so long as you drink it in moderation.

Beer is more nutritious than other alcoholic drinks.

Beer helps reduce stress.

Beer helps prevent kidney stones.

Beer lowers bad cholesterol.

Beer can help protect your heart.

Beer strengthens your bones.

Beer helps cognitive function.

It can boost your self-esteem.

It lowers your risk of diabetes.

It has antioxidants and cancer-fighting compounds.

Beer is all-natural.

Beer has plenty o' B vitamins.

Oh, and it tastes good!
