A mom on TikTok has gone viral for sharing her (somewhat controversial) parenting views… And people are agreeing with her.

33-year-old mother from South Carolina, Lisa Pontius, is known for sharing parental tips and advice on her personal platform on TikTok. However, it was in this video that had many people’s heads turning.

In her viral video, Pontius shared that she believes children should not be made to feel that they owe their parents anything:

"It's a parent's job to provide for their children. It's a responsibility. Not everyone rises to the occasion, but that's like the bare minimum, taking care of your kid's physical and financial needs. The level above that is their emotional needs, which good parents do, but all of that is not a contingent relationship. You're not loving and providing for your children with the expectation that they will blindly obey and do whatever you say as adults."

She explained that her and her husband approach parenting very differently compared to the way they were raised as kids. She believes that using the excuse that a parent “gave a roof over your head” is an old school and manipulative approach.

BuzzFeed got the chance to speak to Pontius and got to ask her more on her parenting style: "[My kids] don't owe me anything once they're grown just because I birthed them. Hopefully by that point, I will have earned their admiration and respect by the relationship we have built, but that's not a guarantee."

Viewers agreed with her statements in the video by sharing comments like: “Children automatically love and respect their parents. You have to be pretty awful to lose that and most def deserve that”, “Parents don’t like to hear they’ve often earned the relationship they have with their child,” and so on.

Do you agree or disagree with this approach to parenting?
