City Hall has finally decided how they will honour Montreal's late jazz great, Oscar Peterson.

Mayor Valérie Plante is expected to announce on Tuesday that part of McGill College Ave., which is undergoing renovation, will be named after the world-renowned jazz musician who passed away in 2007.

Along with the new name, the iconic Montreal boulevard, is also getting a major makeover which includes a "mini forest" and a landscaping job.

Discussions between the city and the family of the famed pianist have been going on for more than a year after a petition to rename Lionel-Groulx métro station after Peterson reached its 25,000-signature goal but to no avail.

The opposition party at city hall also proposed to name the Places des Festivals near Place des Arts after Peterson.

This latest update is good news for fans of Oscar Peterson who have been waiting a long time for the city to decide.

Oscar Emmanuel Peterson is considered one of history's great jazz pianists and played thousands of concerts worldwide in a career lasting more than 60 years. The jazz pianist, virtuoso, and composer was called the "Maharaja of the keyboard" by Duke Ellington, simply "O.P." by his friends, and informally in the jazz community as "the King of inside swing".

He released over 200 recordings, won seven Grammy Awards, as well as a lifetime achievement award from the Recording Academy, and received numerous other awards and honours.
