The future is here… Driverless shuttle busses are coming to Montreal!

The City of Montreal is taking up a pilot project this fall for new automated electric shuttle busses in the Plaza Saint-Hubert area on Rue Saint-Hubert and Rue Saint-André. The shuttle, which includes an operator on board at all times, can allow up to 15 people at a time. However, the shuttle will only allow 5 people for the time being due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The busses, which are free of charge, universally accessible and safe, will take place over two phases. The first phase is expected to begin in October, where the shuttles will travel over a two kilometre loop. The second phase will begin in Spring of 2022, where the shuttles will be synchronized with the city’s STM busses to avoid traffic.

According to a press release from the City of Montreal, the point of the pilot project is to test out new and advanced ways of transportation in the city. The hope is that this project will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and make travel in the area easier for Montrealers - on top of many other benefits.

“These shuttles will boost economic activity in the area by creating an attractive hub that will benefit merchants and enliven the area by attracting more clients. This new method of transportation that is comfortable and environmentally respectful will provide service to the area while improving the active and public transportation experience for users.”

Will you be giving these a try?
