The Giorgio Armani dress Meghan, Duchess of Sussex wore to her interview with Oprah Winfrey last year has been named 2021 Dress of the Year.
The 40-year-old selected the black and white silk georgette dress with lotus flower embroidery and matching belt from the Italian luxury fashion house's spring/summer 2022 cruise collection for her sit-down conversation with the TV host for the special that aired in March 2021.
Now, officials from the U.K.'s Fashion Museum have announced that the famous item has been chosen as Dress of the Year and will go on display at the upcoming exhibition, A History of Fashion in 100 Objects.
Dazed magazine's Ibrahim Kamara and Gareth Wrighton, who selected the dress, insisted the design will "forever endure in the British collective consciousness".
"Meghan's wrap dress by Armani, worn to showcase a divine pregnancy, framed the Duchess in black against the bountiful landscaping of Tyler Perry's Hollywood garden. This look now, through sheer association with a viral television moment, is firmly ingrained in our pop culture psyche," they commented.
In addition, Rosemary Harden, Fashion Museum manager, noted that the dress ties into a long history of members of the royal family sending messages through their sartorial choices.
"The softly structured Armani dress with beautiful appliquéd lotus flower motif was part of a carefully curated look, guaranteed to send messages, and to imprint itself in our consciousness time and time again," she added.
