Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante, the first female Mayor in Montreal history, is supporting Sophie Roy to become the next interim police chief of Montreal… Sorry, the first female interim police chief of Montreal.
Yup, that’s right!
Following the same footsteps as the Montreal Mayor, Roy would be the first female in the city’s history to lead the police force. While this has only been a recommendation made to the Ministry of Public Security so far, Roy has over 34 years of experience under her belt.
According to retired inspector Andre Durocher, “She's got great inside knowledge of the SPVM.”
After having worked as assistant director of criminal investigation, she would be replacing chief Sylvain Caron who announced that he will be retiring in March. Once Roy gets the green light, her name will forever be known in history.
However, interim chiefs have never moved up to permanent positions in Montreal’s history. So, it is likely that this role would only be temporary…
But, of course, there’s a first for everything!
