The Quebec government announced that mask mandates in the province will be lifted in the province on May 14th.
Masks will no longer be required in public spaces, with the exception of public transit, in health-care settings, at long-term care homes, and at other places where any health care is provided.
The elderly are still encouraged to wear masks in public spaces, as they are the most vulnerable.
Last month, the provincial government announced that they would be extending the lifting mask mandates in the province to May. They came to this decision after the large surge in COVID-19 cases in the province after events like March break and Easter.
In addition, Boileau has shared that they do not wish to return to this mandate moving forward: “We strongly suggested, as a recommendation, that the people could evaluate their own risk and see if they wish to take some personal measure."
Health officials would like to remind Quebecers that those infected with the BA.2 variant are contagious for up to 10 days, and should be isolated for a minimum of 5 days. They add that when infected, it is not the time to go to restaurants or invite company over after the 5 day quarantine period is done.
Boileau added that he wishes for everyone to respect the choices of individuals on whether they wish to continue wearing the mask or not.
Quebec is the last province in the country to lift mask mandates.
