Now that the winter season has officially begun (hence: this week’s snowfall)... It is important to stay up to date on the winter season road laws, as implemented by the SAAQ.

In case you need a refresher, here are some rules to keep in mind whenever you are behind the wheel:

1. Snow tires:

From December 1st to March 15th, it is required by law to have snow tires on your vehicle. Failing to do so could result in a fine of up to $300. Winter tires provide better traction and grib as soon as the tempearture drops below 7°C, or when the road is icy.

According to the SAAQ, "The treads on summer and all-season tires, are not optimized to hold snow unlike winter ones," as mentioned on their website. "In fact, the treads on winter tires are designed to retain snow, which enhances their overall grip and traction."

2. Removing snow off your car:

It is illegal to drive with snow on the roof of your car. You could face a penalty for not removing it. No person is allowed to drive a car covered with ice, snow, or any other matter that may detach from the vehicle and be dangerous for other road users. You could face a fine of $60 to $100, plus additional costs.

3. Cleaning your headlights:

Make sure to take some extra time to clear off the headlights, taillights and reflectors on your car before driving.

The SAAQ recommends to put together a kit to keep in your car like a snow brush, ice scraper, windshield washer fluid, shovel and more. They also suggest to reschedule your trip if road conditions are not ideal for driving.

You can visit Québec 511 Infos Transports' website for all the information regarding the quality of the roads.
