Statistics Canada has released a new projection study indicating that Canada’s population will reach 63 million by 2073.
The agency attributes the population increase primarily to migration, noting that natural growth plays a smaller role due to low fertility rates.
According to the projections, the population is expected to rise to between 47 million and 87 million over the next 50 years. Additionally, the number of people aged 85 and over is projected to increase from 896,000 in 2023 to over 3.3 million by 2073.
Statistics Canada also reported that the populations of Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Quebec are expected to decrease, while those of Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia are projected to increase.
