Presidential hopeful Donald Trump has been shot at, at a rally in Pennsylvania.

Shots rang out as Trump was speaking, He grabbed at the side of his face and ducked to the ground.

As security swarmed around him, he got up and raised his fist. There was blood running down the side of his face.

"I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania," Trump wrote on social media soon after.

"Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the Rally who was killed, and also to the family of another person that was badly injured.

"It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country.

"I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear," Trump added.

"I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin.

"Much bleeding took place, so I realised then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA!"

Butler County District Attorney Richard Goldinger, speaking to ABC News America, revealed that the shooter was not within the venue.

"The shooter was on the roof of the building that was adjacent to the venue," he says.

The shooter was killed in the aftermath, along with one rally attendee.
