Cameron Diaz would rather be underdressed than overdressed on the red carpet.
"For me, red carpets have always been about like feeling comfortable and like myself. I'm always like, 'Let me be a little underdressed.' I feel more comfortable underdressed than overdressed, that's just my vibe," she shared.
"It has to feel effortless. I don't like to feel like I'm putting anything on. Fashion is fun, I enjoy it, but when you're standing in front of the world like that, you really want to be in something that makes you feel at ease, so that's what I always look for."
The Holiday star revealed that she once switched an awards show look after learning that she couldn't sit down in it.
For the 2007 Golden Globes, Diaz made the discovery in the car, so she went back and changed into another Valentino dress that felt more comfortable.
"I was so glad I did because I think it's such a beautiful dress," she said of the white one-shouldered gown with a black bow.
She also noted that back in the '90s and early 2000s, actors just wore their own clothes because "there were no stylists" and the red carpets were more relaxed than they are now.
"There wasn't a tonne of interviews, there was just a red carpet, you'd walk through, you'd say hi, you'd wave and stop for a second," the 52-year-old explained. "Now, you have to show up, do 30 interviews before you go in, stop for a camera that does the 360 (degree shot of the outfit) and the nails and the whole fashion of it all."
After a 10-year acting hiatus, Diaz recently returned to screens - and red carpets - with Back in Action, which is now streaming on Netflix.
