Ed Sheeran has shared a throwback photo of himself and Taylor Swift ahead of the release of his new song, Old Phone.

On Tuesday, the Shape of You hitmaker launched a new Instagram account with the handle @teddysoldphone and uploaded 210 photos taken on his phone before December 2015.

Among the snaps is a selfie with Taylor, which appears to have been taken when he was on the road with her during The Red Tour. The trek, in support of the superstar's fourth studio album, Red, ran from 2013 until 2014.

"Always pulled a face in a selfie, this pic was no different," he wrote in the caption.

Another candid pic shows Taylor holding up two pieces of pizza, while a third depicts the Cruel Summer singer walking on a beach.

"Mid tour beach trip," the 34-year-old added.

The account also includes photos of Ed with a number of celebrities, including Robert De Niro, Harry Styles, Bruno Mars, Elton John, Gigi Hadid, and Frankie Muniz.

In the accompanying caption, the star explained that the images were from a device he was ordered to submit to lawyers in 2018 when he was sued by the estate of Marvin Gaye.

They alleged his 2014 song Thinking Out Loud had elements from iconic track Let's Get It On.

After a court case, the jury found in favour of the British artist with a unanimous verdict.

"It felt like a time capsule, a time of life that I was in, and living at that time in 2015. Turning it on really spun me out, I found myself scrolling messages and conversations with people who are no longer here," he shared. "I found myself crying at messages to friends who are now dead, who I won't get to speak to again. I found old photos of me with people I was so close to then, but we've lost touch since. The whole experience was such an emotional journey. I wrote the song Old Phone on my own at 2am whilst jet lagged in India finishing the album, and recorded it that morning."

Old Phone will drop on Thursday.

Ed's eighth studio album, Play, is set to be released this year.
