Shaboozey has defended Megan Moroney following their viral moment at the American Music Awards (AMAs).

The country stars presented the Favourite Country Duo or Group category at the awards show in Las Vegas on Monday.

During their presentation, Moroney, who was reading from a teleprompter, said that the prize had once been awarded to the American folk group the Carter Family, who had "basically invented country music".

Fans then noticed that Shaboozey rolled his eyes at the remark, and the clip quickly began to circulate on social media.

The A Bar Song (Tipsy) hitmaker has now taken to Instagram to clarify that his reaction had "nothing to do" with Moroney.

"Just want to clear something up: my reaction at the AMAs had nothing to do with Megan Moroney!" he wrote in the comments underneath Moroney's latest Instagram post. "She's an incredibly talented, hard-working artist who's doing amazing things for country music, and I've got nothing but respect for her."

The artist then went on to discourage fans from sending hateful messages to the Tennessee Orange singer.

"I've seen some hateful comments directed at her today, and that's not what this moment was about," Shaboozey penned. "Let's not twist the message - she is amazing and someone who represents the country community in the highest light!"

The Beverly Hills singer had taken to X, formerly known as Twitter, earlier in the day to address his viral reaction.

"When you uncover the true history of country music, you find a story so powerful that it cannot be erased...," he shared.

In a second post, he wrote, "The real history of country music is about people coming together despite their differences, and embracing and celebrating the things that make us alike."
