As of today, Thursday, August 28, the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) will no longer issue or use plastic hospital cards at its facilities, including the Montreal General Hospital, Montreal Children’s Hospital, The Neuro, Royal Victoria Hospital, and Lachine Hospital.

This change is part of a province-wide initiative aimed at streamlining the registration process, improving security, facilitating information sharing across the healthcare network, and reducing administrative duplication.

Here’s what this means for patients:

  • New patients must visit the Admitting Office to create a file linked directly to their Quebec health insurance (RAMQ) card.
  • Returning patients are asked to update their personal information at the Admitting Office.
  • Patients without a RAMQ card should bring health coverage from another Canadian province or territory, a government-issued photo ID, and/or proof of private insurance or refugee status.
  • Newborns without a RAMQ card will temporarily have their file linked to the mother’s account.
