Sabrina Carpenter has hinted her new album was fuelled by breaking up with Barry Keoghan.

The Manchild singer split with the Saltburn actor at the end of last year and has implied their break-up was the inspiration behind several songs on her new album, Man's Best Friend.

"I think I came out of a sad situation a lot less bitter than I intended or expected to," Sabrina, 26, told New Zealand-born interviewer Zane Lowe for Apple Music after she was asked about her "intention" behind the new record.

"With a little bit more of the like, 'you know what? There's two people involved and this is part of growing up'."

She explained the album represented a mindset shift around how to respond to the end of a relationship.

"I don't want to be enemies with people that I loved," Sabrina said. "I loved them. I think obviously it depends on what happens and what goes down and how much you feel like you can truly trust that person."

Instead of wallowing in sadness, she added, she had consciously chosen to remain open and positive.

"You kind of just got to get back out there - not even in a dating way, not even in a romantic way," Sabrina reflected. "Just get back out there in terms of, if you're staying inside and you're thinking about how everything's going wrong, everything's going to go wrong."
