Air Transat announced that it has started to suspend flights on Monday after the airline’s pilots’ union issued a 72-hour strike notice for early Wednesday morning.

In a statement released Sunday morning, Air Transat called the strike notice “premature,” adding that they still believe an agreement is possible. However, the airline says it is preparing for a complete shutdown by Tuesday.

According to Air Transat, the decision to cancel flights ahead of the potential strike is meant to prevent passengers, crew, and aircraft from being stranded.

The pilots’ union is seeking improved pay, better working conditions, and a new collective agreement—its last deal was signed in 2015.
