Merriam-Webster has officially revealed its 2025 Word of the Year and it’s “slop.”

Originally used in the 1700s to describe soft mud or watery waste, the term has taken on a new meaning in the digital age. Today, “slop” is commonly used to describe low-quality online content, including absurd videos, creepy imagery, and content that’s clearly fake or generated simply for clicks.

Other words that made Merriam-Webster’s list of top words for 2025 include “6-7,” “performative,” “gerrymander,” “touch grass,” and more.
