Premier François Legault announced his resignation as both Premier of Quebec and leader of the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) during a press conference today, January 14.

Legault has led the province since October 18, 2018. He secured a second mandate in 2022 during the province's first general election held during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Legault confirmed he will remain in office as caretaker premier until the party selects a new leader.

He founded the CAQ nearly 15 years ago in February 2011.
