In an effort to protect West Island homes from rising waters, the City of Montreal has announced the installation of a 1.5-kilometre-long temporary protection system.

The wall, which cost $1.5 million, spans multiple private properties and runs across existing fence lines. While the measure is temporary, Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada noted that the system could be reused in the future.

This initiative is a direct response to the devastating 2017 floods, which saw 800 homes submerged in the West Island area.
