MetLife Stadium hosted an unprecedented evening of sport and entertainment as Spain secured a 1–0 extra-time victory over Argentina to capture the 2026 FIFA World Cup title.
Following a tense, goalless 90 minutes that saw Argentina’s Enzo Fernández dismissed late in regulation, super-sub Ferran Torres broke the deadlock in the 106th minute. Torres volleyed home a loose ball in the box, delivering Spain their second World Cup trophy following their 2010 triumph.
Off the pitch, the match featured the first-ever official halftime show in World Cup history. Curated by Coldplay’s Chris Martin in collaboration with Global Citizen, the fast-paced 11-minute production blended pop, Latin, Afrobeats, K-pop, and orchestral elements.
Madonna opened the performance with a rendition of her hit "Music," arriving alongside Brazilian football icons Ronaldo and Ronaldinho. Conductor Gustavo Dudamel then led an orchestral ensemble alongside The Muppets for a symphonic rendition of "Seven Nation Army," followed by K-pop sensation BTS performing "Dynamite" and Justin Bieber delivering a stripped-back performance of "Everything Hallelujah."
Shakira and Burna Boy took the stage together to perform "Dai Dai," the official anthem of the 2026 World Cup, before Coldplay and the PS22 Chorus concluded the musical segment with a new track, "We Believe in Love." Produced to support the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, the showcase marked a historic fusion of athletics and global entertainment on the world’s largest stage.
