Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a Yellow Watch for Severe Thunderstorms on Tuesday afternoon at 1:54 PM. Atmospheric conditions across the region are highly favorable for developing intense weather capable of producing powerful wind gusts, heavy downpours, and even isolated tornadoes throughout this afternoon and evening.
Sudden, erratic wind gusts pose significant risks of damage to property, including roofs, fences, tree branches, and temporary outdoor shelters. These violent winds also make boating and other nautical activities particularly hazardous over open bodies of water. Furthermore, torrential rainfall can cause sudden flash flooding in low-lying areas and drastically reduce road visibility, creating dangerous driving conditions.
Safety officials strongly advise taking immediate shelter at the first sign of a storm: "When thunder roars, go indoors!" Lightning strikes cause injuries and fatalities every year, making outdoor safety critical during severe weather.
