Cate Blanchett, Laura Linney and Sally Field will battle it out for the Best Actress in a Play gong at the 2017 Tony Awards.
Australian actress Cate received critical acclaim for her role in The Present, while Oscar-winning star Sally is nominated for The Glass Menagerie. Laura has been recognized for her part in Lillian Hellman's The Little Foxes, but all three will have to compete against Jennifer Ehle for Oslo and Laurie Metcalf for A Doll's House, Part 2 if they want to take home the award.
On the musical front, Bette Midler's Hello, Dolly! revival, which had been tipped to receive nominations for this year's ceremony, saw her nominated for the Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical prize. She also has some tough competition though, from Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole for War Paint, Denee Benton for Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 and Eva Noblezada for Miss Saigon.
Kevin Kline is among the actors up for the Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play award, thanks to his role in Present Laughter, while Denis Arndt is up for Heisenberg, Jefferson Mays for Oslo, Corey Hawkins for Six Degrees of Separation and Chris Cooper for A Doll's House, Part 2.
Frasier star David Hyde Pierce has been nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical, but will have to battle it out against Josh Groban for Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812. The pair will also have to beat Ben Platt for Dear Evan Hansen, Andy Karl for Groundhog Day and Christian Borle for Falsettos to take home the award.
Oslo and A Doll's House, Part 2 are also up for the prestigious Best Play gong, alongside Sweat and Indecent.
Dear Evan Hensen, Come From Away, Groundhog Day and Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 are the productions nominated for Best Musical, while Hello Dolly! is nominated for Best Revival of a Musical, along with Miss Saigon and Sunset Boulevard.
A previously announced gong will also see James Earl Jones receive this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
The nominations were announced on Tuesday (02May17) by Christopher Jackson and Jane Krakowski at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center, with 846 Tony voters now given the job of deciding the winners.
