For the last three months, the STM has used caution tape to separate bus drivers from passengers as they boarded buses from the rear making riding the bus effectively free.

That’s all about to change.

Public transit authorities in the greater Montreal region are preparing for a return to normal service as bus fares will gradually resume throughout Montreal.

This includes the city buses on the exo networks, the Réseau de transport de Longueuil (RTL), Société de transport de Laval, (STL) and the Société de transport de Montréal (STM).

While the return to normal will happen over the next few weeks, passengers must hold a valid ticket at all times.

The STM announced they are preparing for a gradual return to front-door boarding and are in the process of installing protective screens to help protect both drivers and customers.  Meanwhile, back-door exiting will be mandatory except for those with mobility issues.

The ARTM is also strongly encouraging passengers to wear face masks or coverings throughout its entire network.

The STM says fare collection and cash payments for its adapted transport services and the 212 Ste-Anne line will begin on June 29 but hasn’t yet given a specific date for its standard fleet.

The RTL will begin fare collection for paratransit on July 1 and is aiming for mid-July for the rest, while the STL announced it will resume fare collection on Aug. 1.
