They say superstitions are irrational beliefs in supernatural influences. But if most Canadians say they're superstitious, does that make most Canadians irrational?

The truth is, superstitious behavior can help us feel more confident and more in control over our lives. It boils down to us feeling safe, and if you are in the majority, the number 13, black cats, breaking mirrors, or walking under ladders, may just be some of the things you actively avoid.

On the Beat 5@7, Cat and Claudia discussed the most common superstitions and asked listeners what they are superstitious about.

The top five most common superstitions according to a recent study:

  1. Friday the 13th brings bad things.
  2. If you have an itchy palm, they say it is a sign of good fortune to come
  3. Walking under a ladder brings bad luck.
  4. Breaking a mirror brings seven years of bad luck.
  5. If you find a horseshoe, it brings good luck
