Making decisions about the interior of your home isn’t always easy, especially if your partner has different tastes and preferences. Decorating a home can also be an emotional experience since you’re making choices that will have a lasting impact on your surroundings. These choices also involve finances, which can be one of the most charged subjects within a relationship. Knowing all this, a recent survey asked 2000 people for advice on what they recommend doing and not doing when decorating your home with your partner.

Tips on how to compromise when decorating your home

1. First, treat every idea with respect.

2. Discuss what sort of vibe you want the house to give. In other words, how do you want your home to feel?

3. Know your strengths and weaknesses. Having both partners use their talents and creativity when designing the home makes everyone feel like their opinions and skills matter.

4. Consider your lifestyle and how your home will match your hobbies, chores, work-life, and so on.
Communication is key to any relationship and that means honesty is important when it comes to making design decisions.

5. Shop together. Don’t let the other feel left out of the decision-making.

6. Be willing to compromise. If you can’t both be 100% happy with every design choice, at least try to equal the playing field. Compromising is obviously an important part of any relationship.

7. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and don’t be afraid to pitch any ideas. And with that said, keep an open mind when listening to your partner. You never know what you might end up liking in the end.
