If the results of a recent survey are to be believed, then ‘tis the season to be dumped.

Christmas may be a time for joy, festive cheer, and spreading your love but the holiday season also has its way of encouraging couples to break up. So, just in case you think you are guaranteed a kiss with your partner under the mistletoe this Christmas or a kiss as the clock strikes midnight on New Year's, you might want to put those feelings on hold…

According to data compiled from Facebook profiles, the 11th of December is the most common day for couples to break up. In fact, the entire month of December is the most popular time of the year for getting dumped.

Digital statisticians analyzed tens of thousands of messages from the social media platform and the numbers don’t lie— the holidays might be the most wonderful time of the year, but if you're in an unhappy relationship, it can quickly turn you into the Grinch.

Below is a list of reasons why some people say it is better to get it over with and break up with your significant other before and not after the holiday break.

Why it's better to break up before the holidays

  • Your holiday will be more meaningful.
  • It will be easier to enjoy your holiday and not worry about the burden of a relationship that is destined to fail.
  • You'll avoid further bonding with both your significant other and their friends and family.
  • You'll both feel better if you're honest
  • You'll save money and not have to buy them or their family gifts.
  • Your support system will be by your side during the holiday.
  • Your family will save money and not buy them gifts.
  • The romantic atmosphere of the holiday might make you rethink your feelings but, in the end, your initial gut feeling to break up was the right decision.
  • You can both start fresh with the new year.
