Quebec reported 1,564 new cases of COVID-19 today along with 36 new deaths related to the virus. Twenty-two of those deaths occurred between Dec. 1 and 6, with two more occurring before Dec. 1.

This is the fourth consecutive day that Quebec health officials are reporting more than 1,500 new COVID-19 cases with Montreal recording the biggest single day increase (492).

Quebec has Canada's highest rate of confirmed cases per capita at 1,812 confirmed cases per 100,000 population. Meanwhile, there are currently a total of 835 people in hospital with COVID-19. Among those, 114 are in intensive care.

Despite the increase in hospitalizations and deaths from COVID-19, the Quebec government does not have plans to impose a stricter lockdown— at least, not now.

“We are watching the evolution of the pandemic each day and we are not ruling anything out,” Premier François Legault said Tuesday at a press conference.

Yesterday we reported that Canada has secured an agreement with Pfizer to procure 249,000 doses of its vaccine before the end of the month, and of those, Quebec will receive around 4,000 doses as early as next week.

Now today, the Maimonides Geriatric Centre in Côte-St-Luc announced it will be among the first CHSLDs to get the Pfizer vaccine in the province, with inoculations set to begin in the next seven days.

The long-term care home (which has been hard hit by the second wave) made the announcement in a letter to residents and their families today from Dr. Lawrence Rosenberg, president of the CIUSSS West-Central Montreal.
