If you asked me yesterday how many people in Quebec are against the curfew that prevents anyone from travelling between 8:00 PM and 5:00 AM, I would have answered most Quebecers— and I would have been wrong.
According to a recent poll, almost two-thirds of Canadians would support a nightly curfew if necessary, to curb the spread of COVID-19 — even if they’re not convinced it would be effective.
And according to the Leger poll, 74% of citizens in Quebec support the new nightly measure, while 19% are opposed to it, and 6% are undecided.
When asked if they think the curfew will help, more than half of Quebec respondents (57%) believe the curfew is an “effective way to reduce the spread of the virus,” while 32% said they think that curfews aren’t effective at limiting the spread of coronavirus.
Léger executive vice-president Christian Bourque said the results suggest Canadians “want to do their part and will stand by their governments” in efforts to reduce the spread of the virus. But it also suggests provinces “need to sell this thing (curfews) if they want to make it work.”
The big takeaway here is that most Quebecers are content with Premier Francois Legault’s decision, even if they are not convinced it will make a huge difference in slowing the spread of COVID-19.
Quebec is the only province so far to have imposed a curfew to control the pandemic. As it currently stands, the curfew is in place until February 8 throughout the province.
