There are many Guinness World Record holders, but this must be one of the most impressive and unbelievable of them all.
A Croatian man named Budimir Buda Šobat has broken his own world record for holding his breath underwater after staying submerged for almost half an hour.
Remember when everyone was impressed with how Tom Cruise held his breath underwater for Mission Impossible? Well, Cruise was underwater for just over six minutes— Sobat more than doubled that time setting a record of exactly 24 minutes and 33 seconds.
The incredible feat took place in a swimming pool, in the town of Sisak, under the supervision of doctors, reporters, and supporters, and saw the 54-year-old daredevil push his body to the limit.
How did he do it?
After a few minutes of hyperventilating on pure oxygen, to increase body oxygenation, Šobat spent close to half an hour face down in the pool, without coming up for air.
Even with the help of pure oxygen preparation, he spent years preparing and training to pump oxygenated blood at a very slow rate through the body, in order to hold his breath for long periods of time.
Why did he do it?
Apart from breaking his previous record, he also helped raise funds for the children of Sisak, an area severely affected by the powerful earthquake that rocked Croatia in December of 2020.
