Michael B. Jordan has shot down rumours suggesting he is set to star as the first black Superman.

The Black Panther actor has been a fan favourite for some time to suit up as the Man of Steel, amid speculation suggesting Henry Cavill will soon step down from the DC Comics superhero role, with some devotees even mocking up artwork featuring Jordan in the famous blue suit and red cape.

The claims were further fuelled earlier this year when Warner Bros. studio chiefs hired novelist Ta-Nehisi Coates and filmmaker J.J. Abrams to revamp the franchise, which is expected to focus on a black Superman.

However, while Jordan is thrilled to see Coates involved in the project, he won't be taking over as Superman.

"It's smart of DC to grab Ta-Nehisi to go ahead and adapt that project," he told The Hollywood Reporter, remarking: "(Coates is) incredibly talented. It's going to be worth checking out."

He added: "I'm flattered that people have me in that conversation. It's definitely a compliment, but I'm just watching on this one."

Casting details for the new Superman project have yet to be unveiled, but Cavill recently made it clear he hopes to hold on to the role for years to come.

Jordan was previously linked to the idea of a black Superman in 2019, after reportedly outlining his vision for the character with Warner executives upon signing a first-look production deal with the company.
