While there are several countries that are ahead of Canada in terms of the number of people who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19— Canada now leads the world in administering the first dose of vaccines, surpassing both the UK and Israel with the highest number of one-dose jabs per capita.
According to Our World in Data —a website that tracks COVID-19 indicators— 48.95% of Canada’s total population have so far received at least one dose. And while only 13% of Canadians are fully vaccinated, Canada should catch up soon considering our population is significantly less than other countries,
Canada’s deputy chief public health officer said this week that most provinces are on track to “shorten the interval” between first and second doses, thanks to millions of more vaccine deliveries expected.
Canada is expected to receive 1.6 million more doses of the AstraZeneca viral vector-based vaccine and is negotiating to procure more doses from the U.S.
Meanwhile, Canada is expected to receive up to 36 million doses of Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines in the next two months.
