Zendaya is pleased she opted for a David Bowie-inspired mullet for the 2016 Grammy Awards.

Back in February 2016, the actress made a splash on the red carpet when she not only recreated Ziggy Stardust's iconic hairstyle, but also channelled the late British musician's androgynous aesthetic by wearing a black Dsquared2 suit, white shirt, and heavy silver jewellery.

Reflecting on the ensemble in an interview for the November 2021 issue of InStyle magazine, Zendaya noted it marked an important moment in her style evolution.

"I got dragged for my mullet at the time, but kids love mullets now," she said. "I'm happy about my David Bowie mullet."

Of late, the likes of Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato have experimented with mullet hairstyles.

Elsewhere in the chat, Zendaya shared that she and longtime stylist Law Roach create a "character" for each red carpet look they put together.

"I think about red carpets as having their own characters and narratives. We build a little story for all the looks. It's like an extension of my acting career in a weird way - you just pop this wig on or whatever it is," the 25-year-old shared. "Clothes sometimes are very emotional, so I get to embody these different facets - maybe they're of myself, or maybe they're alter egos. But I get to meet these different women through clothes."
