A study conducted by University of Georgia found that couples that seek counselling should also consider financial advice, to help better communication between partners… In addition to regular couples counselling, of course.
The study looked at six different couples of varying ages, and had each couple seek counselling from both a financial advisor and a couples therapist to review their emotional and financial goals. After a few weeks of counselling, the couples found themselves communicating better and had many realizations over how money was the source of many of their problems.
While many couples have their personal issues that need to be addressed, the study revealed how money is a common issue among couples. Researchers from the study found that financial concerns should definitely be reviewed in couples counselling before anything else.
According to Study Finds, “[...] The research team believe that all family therapists should be familiar with the basics of financial therapy, especially because a traditional financial planner is in no way equipped to deal with the emotional and psychological relationship problems that can stem from money.”
