Summer in Montreal is just around the corner and it’s about to get real hot and humid!
If you’re a born and raised Montrealer, you know how intense the summer months can get with the humidex. For those of you who live in a space without air conditioning, we’ve got all the tips and tricks you need to help keep you and your family cool this summer:
Close the curtains
Keep the sun from entering your space and keep your blinds and curtains closed throughout the day.
Keep the fans going
You’ll want to make sure that there’s consistent air flow throughout the home. By keeping your fans on, this will help transfer the heat out of the room.
Have your ceiling fans rotate counterclockwise
By setting your ceiling fans counterclockwise, this will allow the air to be shot straight down.
Do your baking and washing at night only
While ovens and dryers give off lots of heat, you’ll want to make sure to do all of your necessary cooking and cleaning when the sun goes down and the house is at a cooler temperature.
Turn on your exhaust fans
Your bathroom and kitchen fans serve the purpose of removing heat from the room and out of the house. To make sure that you keep hot air from staying in the house, you’ll want to turn on your fans to help remove that unwanted heat.
Keep your windows open at night
Naturally, the air is cooler at night. To ensure that you get a good night's sleep and are not too overheated, you’ll want to make sure to keep your windows open at night to let the cold air in.
Turn off unnecessary lights
Lights give off heat. Make sure to turn off your lights when not in use, to avoid that extra warmth in the house.
Always make sure to stay hydrated, take frequent cold showers and trips to the local pool to keep your body from overheating.
Wishing you all a cool summer!
