How much alcohol do you drink on average per week?
Whether you have a glass of wine at the end of each day, or enjoy spending the weekend out with friends at the local pub… We all like to have a drink every now and then! But, at what point does it become too much?
According to a report published by the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction (CCSA), the recommended amount of alcohol adult Canadians should be drinking per week is 2 drinks.
Yup, only 2 drinks per week!
While, this may seem overwhelmingly realistic to those that don’t drink often… This number may seem outrageous to others. From sporting games, weddings, 5a7’s with work, to your casual glass of wine at dinner… Alcohol is simply found everywhere.
According to CCSA however, the more drinks consumed the bigger the risk of injuries or other serious problems. The report recommends drinking very little alcohol to prevent any short or long-term alcohol-related consequences from happening.
Other key takeaways from the Canada’s Guidance on Alcohol and Health report include:
- There are disproportionately more injuries, violence and deaths resulting from men’s drinking.
- Above the recommended low levels of alcohol consumption, the health risks increase more steeply for women than for men.
- It is safest not to drink while pregnant and during the preconception period.
- For women who are breastfeeding, it is safest not to use alcohol.
