Ladies, we've got some good news for you. If you or someone you know work in a federal institution (see full list here), next winter is about to get a whole lot better...
Starting December 15th, federal institutions will be required to hand out free menstrual products to their employees. By mid-December, this will be a requirement for federally-regulated employers. More specifically, free tampons and pads will need to be handed out (hello, stress-free periods!)
The changes announced earlier this week will apply to a little over 1 million people in federal workplaces. It's estimated that 35 per cent of these people require menstrual products on a regular basis. All in all, that's over 400,000 people this new regulation will be helping!
The recent initiative is part of a bigger plan to hopefully reach menstrual equity, aiming to make menstrual products available to those who can't necessarily afford them across the country. In Scotland, menstrual products have been handed out for free to all as of last year.
This is good news, Montreal! And, more importantly, it's a step forward in women's rights and the #PeriodPositiveWorkplace!
