Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and long-time wife & partner Sophie Grégoire Trudeau have officially split.

The decision was announced through an Instagram post made by Justin Trudeau on Wednesday morning. "Sophie and I would like to share the fact that after meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to separate," Trudeau wrote.

Justin Trudeau and Sophie Grégoire Trudeau originally met in Montreal, and got married in 2005 at Montreal's Sainte-Madeleine d'Outremont Church. The pair had been married for 18 years, and have since then brought into the world their three children, Xavier, Ella-Grace and Hadrien.

"For the well-being of our children, we ask that you respect our and their privacy," the Prime Minister also wrote.
