As the Montreal Climate Summit kicks off, Mayor Valérie Plante has announced that the city is committing to achieving zero net land artificialization by 2030—a bold move to protect the environment and adapt to climate change.

In a press release, the city explained that land artificialization—covering natural ground with concrete, asphalt, or buildings—increases the risks of flooding, global warming, and pollution. The administration emphasized that "greening is the best way to cool the ambient."

To support this goal, Montreal aims to limit mineral and impermeable surfaces to 62% of the territory, reducing urban heat and enhancing the city’s resilience to climate impacts.
