Demi Lovato has cancelled five of her concerts amid concerns over her health.

The Heart Attack singer realised she had "overextended" herself, she told fans in a heartfelt Instagram post.

Dedicating her words to the "Lovatics" - the collective name for her fanbase - Demi, 33, explained her chronic health concerns had made it clear she would not be able to fulfil her promised 23-date It's Not That Deep tour.

"My Lovatics - I am so excited to get back on stage this year and visit you in as many cities as I can," she wrote on Tuesday morning.

"While starting to prepare for the tour, I realized that I have overextended what may be possible."

Over the years, Demi has been open about her mental health issues, which include a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, substance use disorder, eating disorders, and depression.

This week, she shared how she would "protect" her wellbeing from the gruelling schedule of a multi-date concert tour.

"To protect my health, and ensure I can give you my all at each show, I need to build in more time to rest and rehearse," the Sorry Not Sorry singer wrote, "and ultimately adjust to a schedule with some more time off that will allow me to handle the entire run of the tour."

In October, Demi announced the It's Not That Deep tour to support her ninth studio album, which she described as a return to her electronic-pop roots.
