1, 2, 3, 4, 5, everybody knows German artist Lou Bega's massively successful 1999 recording of 'Mambo No. 5'... But few also know its origins! We asked Sam and his opponent a simple question this morning... “Which Mambo does Lou Bega sing about?”

They both go it right...

But would you have known all of THIS about 'Mambo No. 5'?

  1. It's older than you think.
'Mambo No. 5' was originally written in 1949 and released in 1950 by Cuban artist Dámaso Pérez Prado.

  2. The song that went to trial...
After being sampled by Lou Bega in his 1999 song of the same name, 'Mambo No. 5' became the center of a law suit between Prado's estate, Peermusic, and Lou Bega. German courts refused to grant Bega's estate full rights to the song, instead declaring it a “new song” co-written by Prado and Bega.

  3. A Grammy... But it's not what you think!
'Mambo No. 5' won a sort of GRAMMY... But not the one we usually think of! The original 1950 version was inducted into the Latin Grammy hall of Fame in 2001... Two years after Lou Bega's version popularized the song.

  4. Annoying?!
'Mambo No. 5' ranked 6th in a 2007 Rolling Stone poll about the “most annoying songs ever”!
