You Christmas tree has done its job by making you home a bit merrier during the Holidays, but now it’s time to clean it up and move on to the next thing! But if you put up a real tree this Holiday season, its journey won’t be over until it’s been turned to mulch by the city and reused as compost for future trees...
Here is WHEN, WHERE and HOW to prepare your tree for collection and have it taken care of by the city’s waste collection services.
First, you need to make sure your tree is ready:
- Remove all ornaments, lights, tinsel, and garlands from the tree or they’ll get caught in the chipper;
- Do not pack the tree in a plastic bag;
- Do not block the sidewalk;
- Do not plant the tree in a snowbank. This makes it hard to distinguish from live trees!
Now that your tree is ready for the municipal composting service, it's important that you leave it out on the curb at the right date and time. Mulch made from discarded pine trees has multiple uses, including as fertilizer to grow more Christmas trees for the future!
In Montreal, there is a municipal composting service which will dispose of your tree in the best, most-eco friendly way possible. Each borough has its own tree collection schedule; most will pick up discarded trees sometime in January.
In Côte-des-Neiges - Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, Montreal's most populated borough, tree collection take place on January 13 and 20, 2021 (both Wednesdays). Place your Christmas tree on the curbside before 7 a.m. on collection day.
If you live in another borough, check your area's collection schedule on the City of Montreal's website by clicking here!
