Atomic clock scientists want to shorten the minute from 60 to 59 seconds!
The Earth’s rotation is literally speeding up bit by bit every year, making days a hair shorter and usually, we would throw in leap second or two at the end of the year, BUT that comes at a risk for things like satellites and navigation systems
So the idea of shortening the standard minute by one second could balance it all out and keep it constant enough for computers and humans – the final decision will probably be made at the World Radiocommunication Conference in 2023.
