With TikTok, anyone and anything can become famous overnight and anyone and anything can make a comeback. That’s the power of social media and the latest craze is once again, a blast from the past.
If you’ve browsed TikTok lately, chances are you’ve seen giant colourful plastic rings in different shapes that line the fingers of users across the platform. It’s a trend that seems inspired by Ring Pops, a brand of fruit flavored lollipops in the form of a wearable plastic ring that was a huge hit in the ‘80s. The difference here is these rings aren’t edible and they aren’t made for kids. In fact, it is becoming so popular, dozens of celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Dua Lipa, and Bella Hadid have been spotted wearing them and promoting the trend on their social media accounts.
Meanwhile, search engines are reporting a huge spike in searches for “resin rings” and other keywords such as “chunky,” “bold” and “colorful rings” being the most popular. And according to Lyst, the most popular colour searches are neon green, hot pink, and yellow.
Yes folks, a new micro-trend has emerged in the form of big, bad, and bold plastic inexpensive rings— and that’s not a bad thing.
