With an increase in population, more businesses, and more people owning smartphones, it was inevitable that the island of Montreal would eventually need a new three-digit area code.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission actually began the process of adding the new area code back in 2019 and now according to a recent press release, it will be effective as of October 22, 2022.

So, what is the new area code, you ask? Its name is 263.

Each three-digit area code may contain up to 7,919,900 unique phone numbers, so we assume this new addition should hold up for a very long time.

The CRTC predicts that 514 and 438 numbers will run out by November 2024.
