The use of formal address for school staff, specifically the titles "Madame" and "Monsieur," has officially become the new standard in elementary and high schools across Quebec.

Starting today, January 5, 2026, all schoolchildren must address staff formally. This measure is part of a plan by the CAQ government to strengthen respect and civility in schools.

Students who fail to comply with the new rules will face a range of sanctions, including warnings, written reflection, detention, suspension, and expulsion.
