Dealing with Montreal’s Flash Floods? Here’s What To Do.
Pointe-Claire Flood / Canadian Press

The recent intense thunderstorms hit Montreal and the South Shore pretty hard, leaving hundreds of homes dealing with unexpected flash flooding. If your basement took an unexpected hit, don’t panic... We’ve got a quick checklist to help you navigate the aftermath!

First things first, make sure you document absolutely everything. Snap photos and grab videos of all the damage before you start cleanup, and keep every single receipt for your insurance claim.

When you're ready to pump out the water, patience is key. Emptying your basement too quickly can actually warp your foundation walls, so take it slow! Also, please play it safe around electricity. Avoid any wet rooms with plugged-in appliances, and definitely don't touch a submerged electrical panel.

Spotted a major hazard outside like an uprooted tree or a displaced manhole cover? Dial 311 right away to let the city know. And if you notice downed power lines, Hydro-Québec is your go-to call.

Hang in there, Montrealers!
