Every relationship is different, and when it comes to handling finances, some couples decide to combine their earnings while others choose to keep their money separate. Both options are healthy ways to manage money in a relationship but if you fall into the latter group, chances are, you may feel that what you do with your own money isn’t any of your partner’s business. And that’s a perfectly acceptable outlook so long as both of you are on the same page. But hiding money your partner doesn’t know about is another issue entirely.
Recently on The Beat 5@7, Cat and Claudia discussed a new survey that finds over one-third of Americans in a relationship say they’re hiding a secret stash of money from their significant other.
Of the 2,000 people surveyed, 37 percent admitted having a secret coffer of extra funds while the average respondent said they have several arguments about money per month with their partner.
The most common reason people say they hide money from their partner is that they are worried about debt (31%), followed by concerns that either they (30%) or their partner (23%) spend too much money.
The good news is that regardless of the results, 83 percent believe it’s important to have open and honest conversations with their loved ones about money.
